(I wrote this originally in spanish and a very good friend of mine, @andycyca on Twitter translated to english, because many people in USA who’re latin descendants are bashing and hating Disney for no reason, I, as a 100% mexican, support Pixar and Disney and understand the difference between appropiation and tribute.)

Wow, people impress me…

And I mean it in the worst possible sense, all this fuss about the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) has unleashed a series of reactions going from the laughable to the pathetic, but the truth is that there are more calls to arms than quiet voices in this matter.

Pixar has been working for years in a movie based on the Day of the Dead that would be directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3), but it still needed the approval of Pixar’s stockholders; now, since Disney-Pixar is trying to trademark it, it’s likely that the movie has been greenlighted and the trademark is meant to avoid problems if any other producer wants to doa film on the same theme.

However, the Yellow press, both digital and traditional, have entered their yellow game of fluffing the note, calling it an “intention to register (trademark) the celebration itself” or “culture appropriation”, when it’s only about a trademark that would affect whatever products Pixar would choose to release under this name; our country’s (Mexico’s) traditions are an Intangible Cultural Heritage according to UNESCO (meaning that NO OTHER COUNTRY can ever “own” this celebration or give it another meaning) and [the trademarking] would be a way of preventing incidents like the Antz/A Bug’s Life issue in the late 90s

The background problem is this: PIXAR NEEDS NEW INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES. More so in recent years, they’ve been working mostly on sequels to their best selling movies not out of initiative, but because of pressure from the stockholders. One of their IPs was cancelled recently: Newt, which was scheduled for Summer 2012 and was substituted by Brave, which went through several production problems that ultimately ended in its creator and director being fired, replaced by Mark Andrews, who worked on Cars (see a trend here?). This movie was (or would’ve been) part of a new generation of original characters in Pixar

However, it’s highly likely that all this negative publicity for the movie will end in one of two scenarios: a) Pixar will rename the project and issue a public apology, which would leave everyone happy, or b) facing this unflattering publicity and the little support behind it necause of this conflict Pixar decides to cancel the movie, which would be a disgrace. After all, it’s Pixar we’re talking about: an entretainment company with very high quality standards and never leaves details unattended. Examples are unnecesary, everybody’s familiar with their works. If any studio is able to make amovie based on the Day of the Dead with charisma, respect to tradition and a wholly positive message, that one is Pixar

But people don’t know better and run alarmed because they think that a neoliberal american company will want to make a product based on another country’s tradition, it’s synonym with buying or owning the culture, they think that cultural mixes are strictly forbidden, after all it’s not like the Day of the Dead is a tradition brought here from Europe, combined with prehispanic traditions so that the locals could adopt them; that has never happened, everything was born just like we know it. The anime they enjoy so much wasn’t born from copying Walt Disney’s characters, mexican food has never served itself with animals or spices not native to this land such as the pig, cinammon or cow.

All those people screaming this is a cultural massacre that should be stopped are people that don’t understand either how culture permeates itself, how a foreign culture can mix with another one (by conquest or convenience), how their features have been exchanged and joined together. This has happened since long ago and it doesn’t mean the disappearance of either culture. But of course, since the *gringos* have no culture they have to steal them without shame, that’s why Jazz and Pop Art or comics exist. The people will jump at the opportunity to defend whatever if you tell them the americans want to take it, because we “hate the gringos” and that’s why we all went to see every single Pixar movie and they don’t have the right to make a movie based on the Day of the Dead even if they live in California, the state with the biggest mexican population north of the Bravo

Defending culture from foreign “appropriation” is a psychotic delirium because such appropriation doesn’t exist; but interpretations do exist. Pixar/Disney aren’t planning to patent the way we celebrate Día de Muertos, they want to make an audiovisual representation based on their experience with this culture. Reproducing celtic tales, germanic legends retold by the Grimm Brothers or a story about King Arthur and Merlin didn’t mean cultural appropriation: anyone can go and read the original. If their versions are more popular isn’t Disney/Pixar’s fault, it’s the fault of everyone who didn’t bother to study or read a subject more thoroughly. The only thing worse than this supposed cultural appropriation is a people’s cultural ignorance of their own origins and history

I will defend this movie because I LOVE THE DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS and I LOVE PIXAR’S MOVIES (provided they are not senseless sequels) and Pixar wanting to make a movie about a certain tradition doesn’t mean they want to sell it, it means that they love that tradition; they love it so much that they want to share it with more people. If they do that, I’ll be grateful to them, a thousand times more than I will be with those who banned others to manifest themselves just because they wanted their mestizo tradition (which they believe to be prehispanic)

Acerca del Drama de Disney y el Dia de Muertos

Wow, la gente me impresiona…

Y lo digo en el mal sentido, todo este problema acerca del dia de muertos ha desatado una serie de reacciones que van desde lo risible hasta lo patético, pero lo cierto es que hay mas aspavientos que serenidades en este asunto.

Pixar lleva preparando desde hace años una película acerca del Dia de los Muertos que seria dirigida por Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3), pero todavía necesitaba la aprobación de los inversionistas de Pixar, ahora, debido al registro de marca que intenta realizar Disney-Pixar, es probable que a la película ya se le haya dado luz verde, y el registro de marca es para evitar problemas si alguna otra productura desea realizar una película símilar basada en el tema.

Sin embargo, los medios amarillistas, digitales y tradicionales, entraron al juego amarilista de “aborregar” la nota poniendole lana de más, llamandolo una “intención de registrar la celebración” o “apropiarse de la cultura, cuando solo se trata de un trademark que afectaría los productos que Pixar realice bajo este nombre, las tradiciones de nuestro pais, que son Patrimonio Intangible de la Humanidad según la UNESCO (lo cual significa que NINGUN OTRO PAIS puede apropiarse de esta celebración o otorgarle otros significados) y sería una forma de evitar un incidente como el que ocurrió con Antz y A Bug’s Life a finales de los 90.

El problema de fondo es el siguiente: PIXAR NECESITA NUEVAS PROPIEDADES INTELECTUALES, sobre todo en los últimos años, se ha dedicado a sacar secuelas a algunos de sus trabajos más taquilleros, no por iniciativa propia, si no por intención de sus inversionistas, recientemente, fue cancelada otra propiedad intelectual, Newt, programada para verano del 2012, y que fue sustituida por Brave, que atravesó por algunos horribles problemas de producción que hicieron que su creadora y directora original fuera despedida del cargo y fuera asumido por Mark Andrews, que trabajó en Cars (¿detectan el patrón?), esta película es (o seria) parte de una nueva oleada de personajes originales en Pixar.

Sin embargo, es muy probable que toda esta publicidad negativa que recibió la película, termine en uno de dos posibles escenarios: a) Pixar renombrará la película y pedirá una disculpa pública, lo cual sería un escenario que dejaria contento a todo mundo, o b) Ante la publicidad negativa y el poco apoyo que recibe la película por el conflicto que la rodea, decide cancelarla, lo cual sería una desgracia muy grave, después de todo, es Pixar, una compañía de entretenimiento con estándares de calidad muy altos que nunca se toma los detalles a la ligera, y no es necesario que de ejemplos, todo mundo esta familiarizado con su trabajo. Si alguien podía hacer una película acerca de dia de muertos que tuviera carisma, respetara las tradiciones y diera un mensaje más que positivo a todo mundo, ese es Pixar.

Pero la gente es tonta, demasiado, y corre alarmada por que piensa que el hecho de que una compañía americana neoliberal quiera realizar un producto basado en una tradición de otro país, es sinónimo de compra de cultura o de apropiación, y que esta prohibidisimo el cruce del culturas, despues de todo, no es como que el Dia de Muertos sea una tradición traida de Europa y combinada con tradiciones prehispánicas para que los nativos las adoptaran como propias, total, eso nunca ha pasado, todo nació así como lo conocemos, el anime que tanto les gusta no nació de la copia de modelos creados por Walt Disney, o la comida mexicana nunca se ha nutrido de animales o especias que no se dieran naturalmente en México como el cerdo, la canela del agua de horchata o la res de los tacos de bisteck.

Toda esa gente que está gritando que esto es una masacre cultural y que debe ser detenida son personas que no entienden como funciona las permeaciones culturales, culturas vecinas o que se han mezclado (por conquistas o simplemente por convivencia) han intercambiado rasgos y se han amalgamado, esto ha sucedido desde hace mucho tiempo, y eso no significa la desaparición de alguna de alguna cultura. Pero claro, los gringos no tienen cultura, asi que la roban descaradamente, por eso existen cosas como el Jazz, el Pop Art o el cómic. La gente saltará a defender lo que sea si le dices que un gringo quiere llevarselo, porque “odiamos a los gringos”, y por eso todos hemos visto cada película que Pixar ha sacado, y ellos no tienen derecho de hacer una película acerca de Dia de Muertos nisiquiera por vivir en California, el estado americano con más latinoamericanos por arriba del Rio Bravo en America.

Querer defender una cultura de una “apropiación” es algo psicótico, no existe tal apropiación, solo existe la interpretación, Pixar y Disney no planean patentar la forma de festejar el Dia de Muertos, quieren hacer una representación audiovisual basada en su convivencia con esta cultura durante años, el hecho de que reprodujeran cuentos celtas, leyendas alemanas recontadas por los Hermanos Grimm o una historia sobre la leyenda del Rey Arturo y Merlín no significó la apropiación de esa cultura, cualquier persona que desee leer acerca de eso puede informarse y concoer la historia real, si las versiones de Disney son mas populares no es culpa de ellos, es culpa de la gente por no querer estudiar o leer a profundidad un tema, lo único peor que la supuesta apropiación cultural es la ignorancia cultural de un pueblo acerca de su propia historia.

Y yo defenderé esta película porque AMO EL DIA DE MUERTOS y AMO LAS PELÍCULAS DE PIXAR (cuando no son secuelas sin sentido), y que Pixar quiera hacer una película acerca de una tradición no significa que quieran venderla, signfica que ellos aman tanto esa tradición. que quieren que más gente la conozca, si ellos hacen eso, estaré agradecido con ellos, mil veces mas de lo que lo estaré con la gente que le prohibió a otras personas manifestarse solo porque no queria que le tocaran su tradición mestiza que creen que es totalmente prehispánica.

Frist off, I want to apologize to my followers because this is going to be a long, political-themed answer. These are not fun to have on your dash, so to every other question I get regarding Venezuela’s situation, I’m just going to redirect them to this ask.

Now tegosaur, I appreciate your concern and thank you for asking me about this. I am not the press and I’m not related to the media in any way, so I can only answer you as a citizen of Venezuela, and according to my own experiences in the matter.

Countries like Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, China, and so many others, have “stable” political relations to Venezuela’s current goverment. Therefore, those statements are only logical. You must remember that the media is and will always be easily manipulable.

My advise would be (in this case, and in any happening that makes it to the international news from any country in the world), not to believe everything the local press says, and make sure to consult several sources from all over the world, including a country’s citizens themselves. No matter how impartial a news company may claim to be, they will never give you the full picture of what’s going on and will keep biased one way or another. The election was close, yes, but the results estimated for both parties do not match. Therefore, a recount is needed. Makes sense I think.

Now on your second question, it’s easy and yet difficult to answer. There’s just so many things wrong with this man I almost don’t know where to start.

But let’s start by the most obvious one, which is that he’s 100% illegitimate as a president. No, I’m not talking about the fraud.

You see, according to our constitution, when a president passes away, the new provisionary president to take charge must be the president of the National Assembly (in our case, a dude named Diosdado Cabello). Maduro was the Vicepresident. He got the charge because Chavez so decided it, and no one in the goverment opposed to it, but that does not erase the fact that it’s illegal. This all happened prior the elections.

Now, in the 100+ days he’s been “president”, we’ve had the highest robbery and murder rate EVER, generalized food and medicine shortages, two devaluations of our coin, and lots of other things, like making the workers of public companies like PDVSA (Petroleum of Venezuela) deposit part of their salary to “contribute” to his electoral campaign.

And if that isn’t enough (yeah, it gets longer), after “winning” the elections, he accepted the recount and then retracted, he took oath as president ignoring the request for a recount of the votes (which is a right of the candidates stated in the constitution), has denied the right to speak to opposition deputies in the National Assembly (which is a right of any deputy stated in the constitution), has prohibited public manifestations (which is a right of the people stated in the constitution), has filed the order to put Capriles under arrest for “inciting violence”, has threatened Spain into not give any opinions towards the matter, is constantly attacking Obama and his goverment, has called his followers and the military to “defend the revolution”, has had civils (mostky students) gotten SHOT AT POINT BLANK FOR PROTESTING (pacifically, as they were unarmed) AND EVEN YET, HE CLAIMS HE IS THE PRESIDENT OF PEACE, LOVE AND DEMOCRACY.

So, the thing is not wether everyone wanted Capriles to win. Everyone wanted to have a legit goverment, respectful of the constitution and laws, chosen in a democratic way, willing to govern not 50% of the country, but the country as a whole.

And we didn’t get that.

Instead we get a dictator that is attacking half of my country, while favouring the other half, manipulating the media and ignoring the International demand of a vote recount because he so obviously won through fraud.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why shit is going down in Venezuela.

This is one of the most comprehensive summaries of what’s going on in the country. I would add, for those not in the know, that the Venezuelan weekly murder rate is over 100 people, in a country of 30 million. Yearly, our murders number around 15000-19000.

Also, during Maduro’s 100-days-of-presidency, power outages (already a bane during the Chavez regime) came back in spades. The government simply said that it was “sabotage from conspirators” and militarized the already state-owned power company. Recently, the man in charge simply said that instead of solving the outages, they would “distribute them equally between the rich and the poor”, so as to make sure that everyone will suffer them EQUALLY.

Lastly, in three days of Maduro’s fraudulent regime, any opposition congressman or woman that refused to acknowledge him as president has been denied the right to speak in the Assembly by Assembly president Diosdado Cabello. Additionally, any of them who were head of any of the many cabinets within the assembly were immediately sacked from their posts.
